Thai Basil Tofu Stir-Fry

Serves: 2 | Prep time: 5 mins | Cook time: 15 mins | Total time: 20 mins

Ingredients You'll Need

  • 8 oz extra-firm tofu (226g), pressed and cut into very small cubes

  • 1 ½ tablespoons cornstarch

  • ¼ teaspoon white pepper powder

  • ¼ teaspoon salt (or to taste)

  • 1 ½ tablespoons avocado oil (I used avocado oil, or any neutral high-smoke point oil)

  • 2 teaspoons dark soy sauce

  • 3 teaspoons fresh lime juice

  • 1 teaspoon hot sauce (I used Sriracha, adjusted to preference)

  • 1 ½ tablespoons brown sugar

  • 1 teaspoon toasted sesame oil

  • 5-6 large garlic cloves, finely chopped

  • 1-inch fresh ginger, finely chopped (optional)

  • 1 large green / red bell pepper, sliced into thin strips

  • ½ cup fresh Thai basil leaves, packed

Step-by-Step Cooking Instructions

  1. Prep the Tofu: Pat the extra-firm tofu completely dry with a clean kitchen towel or paper towel. Cut the block into small cubes (about ½-1 inch size). In a medium mixing bowl, gently toss the tofu cubes with the cornstarch, white pepper powder, and salt until each individual piece is evenly coated.

  2. Whisk the Stir-Fry Sauce: In a small bowl or liquid measuring cup, combine the dark soy sauce, fresh lime juice, hot sauce, brown sugar, and toasted sesame oil. Whisk the mixture thoroughly until the brown sugar is fully dissolved, then set it aside near your stove.

  3. Sear to Golden Perfection: Heat the avocado oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Once the oil is hot and shimmering, add the coated tofu cubes in a single layer. Let them cook undisturbed for 2-3 minutes per side, gently turning them until all edges are beautifully crisp, golden-brown, and sturdy.

  4. Sauté the Aromatics & Veggies: Turn the heat down slightly to medium. Add the finely chopped garlic and minced ginger. Stir-fry rapidly for about 30 seconds until intensely fragrant, taking care not to let the garlic burn. Toss in the sliced bell pepper strips and cook for 1-2 minutes until they turn tender-crisp.

  5. The Grand Finale Toss: Pour the whisked stir-fry sauce directly into the pan with the vegetables. Bring it to a quick simmer, toss everything vigorously for 1 minute until the sauce reduces into a glossy, amber glaze coating every square inch of tofu.

  6. Wilting the Basil: Turn off the heat completely. Drop the half-cup of fresh Thai basil leaves into the pan. Stir-fry gently using the residual heat of the pan for about 30 seconds until the leaves are aromatic and beautifully wilted. Serve immediately!

The A and M Kitchen Pro-Tips

  • Tofu Choice Matters: Always opt for extra-firm or super-firm tofu for this dish. Soft or standard firm varieties contain too much moisture and will crumble in the pan during high-heat stir-frying.

  • Thai Basil vs. Sweet Basil: Traditional sweet Italian basil has a milder, sweet licorice aroma, whereas authentic Thai basil features sharp purple stems and delivers an unmistakable peppery, anise flavor profile. Try sourcing it from your local Asian market for the truest street-food finish!

  • Serving Suggestions: Pile this shimmering stir-fry high inside a minimalist porcelain bowl alongside a piping hot side of steaming jasmine rice or brown rice. Grab a fork (or chopsticks) and dig right in!
